Brahn drew a deep breath as the ship began to rumble. He hated sitting in an antechamber waiting for the action to take place. After years spent in the military, he'd had more than his fill. Joining the Lord Marshal's bodyguards was supposed to be the end of that. He at least wanted to see his fate coming.

His computer automatically attached to the ship's network, which showed it was no different than any other. He popped his safety harness and stood. Cirilla grabbed his hand, staring at him with wide, quivering eyes.

"What're you doing?" She asked. "Zali asked us to stay here!"

"And you're going to," Brahn replied, "but I need to know more about what's happening. I'll be back soon."

"You sure that's a good idea?" Gilin asked. "Do you know your way around?"

"Yes, Prytin," Brahn spat. "Thank you for your concern. If the two of you would kindly ensure nothing happens to Cirilla..." She stood, gripping his hand tighter. "What are you doing now?"

"Going with you."

"That's out of the..."

"Don't," Cirilla interrupted. "We've gone through this together so far, I'm not leaving you. That's the deal, remember? You're supposed to be my bodyguard."

Brahn sighed. "Zali's going to lose her mind." He pulled her toward the door. "Come on."

They stepped into the hall finding it deserted. This is odd. He expected to see people moving about, soldiers or technicians, crew members moving through their routines. Brahn drew her toward the elevator, checking each hallway they passed. Finally, on the last one before their destination, he saw a single man rushing away from them.

That helps. I thought she might have a skeleton crew. That might've still been true. Did the resistance lack even the basic number of people required to properly pilot their vessels? It won't bode well when they go up against the real military. They need every station manned if they want to be successful.

"You're tense," Cirilla asked. "What's wrong?"

"Far more than I care to discuss," Brahn said, "but we haven't left the water yet."

"How do you know?"

"There's a sound to being on a ship," Brahn replied, "an ambient noise. You feel it more than hear it, I guess. Through the hull, the floor even, you can feel a certain vibration. It's different when you're in the air... or space."

"How many times have you been underwater?"

"Shockingly, more than you'd think. It's a nasty tactic allowing us to get closer to landmasses for amphibious landings. I've done a number of those. Quite effective for getting a surprise attack on a fortified enemy. Often done when a leader wants to grab a little extra glory before the rest of the fleet arrives."

"Of course that's why it happens." Cirilla sighed. They arrived at the elevator and he hit the call button. "Do you think she'll really be upset with us for showing up?"

"I don't care. She shouldn't have brought us if she didn't want us involved. I want to look out the viewscreen while we flee this place. Watch as we depart the world, engage someone.
